Comcast is breaking up with NBCU. Why did it ever buy it in the first place?

Comcast announced a plan to separate into two companies: one focused on broadband services and another operating NBCUniversal's entertainment assets. The separation will create an independent publicly traded NBCUniversal company. Comcast acquired NBCUniversal in 2011 for approximately 13.8 billion dollars. The breakup follows years of declining cable television subscribers and shifting media consumption patterns.
