At Gettysburg, a Reporter Captured a Nation’s Loss, and His Own

Samuel Wilkeson Jr., a reporter for The New York Times, filed a dispatch from the Gettysburg battlefield in July 1863. After submitting his report, Wilkeson left the battlefield to search for his son, a Union Army officer. His son, Lieutenant Bayard Wilkeson, was killed during the battle.
