Wednesday, September 16, 2026
Aaron Reitz, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, stated at a press conference near the Texas-Mexico border that federal authorities faced constraints in prosecuting cartel members during the Biden administration. Reitz said the Trump administration's Foreign Terrorist Organization designation of cartels is enabling the government to increase enforcement efforts at the border. Reitz did not specify which cartels received the FTO designation or provide details on the legal constraints he referenced.
