EU Proposes Canada to Become First ‘Associate Member’; Fed Decision on Deck

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed that Canada become the first associate member of the European Union during her state of the union address in Strasbourg, France, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney present. Von der Leyen stated, "I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to being the first associate member of the European Union." Financial markets showed modest gains as traders awaited the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision and updated economic projections.
