Record heatwaves in France set to make champagne stronger

French winemakers are permitted to produce champagne with alcohol content up to 15 percent by volume following the 2025 harvest, according to regulations set by the Champagne appellation authority. The harvest produced grapes with higher sugar content than typical years due to elevated temperatures. Champagne producers previously faced a maximum alcohol content limit of 12.5 percent.
