Oakland schools in hotseat over 'students of color' program while taking millions in federal funding

Parents Defending Education filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights alleging that Oakland Unified School District's Latinx mentoring program restricts enrollment to students of certain racial or ethnic backgrounds. The complaint invokes Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in programs receiving federal funding. Oakland Unified School District receives federal education funding. The district has not yet publicly responded to the complaint.
