Mexico’s Ruling Party Turns Back on Accused Drug Lord After His Return to State Governor's Office

Salvador Cervantes Cervantes resumed his position as governor of Tamaulipas state after returning from the United States, where he faced federal indictment on drug trafficking and weapons charges. The MORENA party, Mexico's ruling party, publicly distanced itself from Cervantes following his return. Cervantes had been a fugitive from U.S. Department of Justice authorities prior to his reappearance in the state.
