Screwworm's Return to the US Sets up Yearslong Fight
Thursday, July 2, 2026
The New World screwworm, a parasitic fly, was detected in US livestock for the first time in approximately 50 years. The USDA announced its response to the infestation. The screwworm lays eggs in open wounds on animals, and the larvae feed on living tissue. Beef prices may be affected by control and prevention efforts required to manage the outbreak.
