See How Europe’s Heat Waves Melted the Alps’ Glaciers

Snowfall from the previous winter in the Alps melted approximately one month earlier than the historical average following two periods of elevated temperatures in the spring and early summer. Glacial ice that became exposed as the snow receded has begun melting at accelerated rates. Swiss glaciers lost roughly 6% of their remaining volume in 2022, according to measurements by the Swiss Academy of Sciences.
