US boosts drone surveillance as flesh-eating screwworms spread in Texas

The Department of Homeland Security deployed hundreds of drones to conduct aerial surveys of wildlife and livestock across Texas in response to the spread of screwworms in the state. Screwworms are parasitic insect larvae that infest open wounds in animals. The drones were reassigned from other Homeland Security operations to support surveillance efforts. The redeployment aimed to track the geographic extent of the infestation and identify affected animals.
