NASA’s Curiosity rover found a ‘sea of polygons’ on Mars

Thursday, July 30, 2026

NASA's Curiosity rover photographed a field of polygonal fractures covering Valle Grande, a valley on Mars. The formations, which are honeycomb-shaped and measure 1.5 to 3 inches wide, were documented by Curiosity in images released by NASA. The rover had previously identified similar polygonal fractures in smaller patches on Mars, but this represents a larger concentration in a single location.
