A Jupiter-size planet that escaped its star's death

A planet with a mass comparable to Jupiter was detected orbiting at a distance from a white dwarf star, suggesting it escaped being engulfed when the star entered its red giant phase. The mechanism by which the planet avoided destruction remains unknown. Astronomers detected the planet through indirect observations of the white dwarf system.
