Microsoft Reports a Massive 25 Percent Jump in Emissions

Microsoft's greenhouse gas emissions increased 25 percent between 2020 and 2024, primarily due to expansion of data centers supporting artificial intelligence operations, according to the company's 2024 environmental report. The company reported using 24.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2024, up from 17.6 million metric tons in 2020. Microsoft stated that data center electricity consumption rose significantly during this period to support cloud services and AI development.
