Federal appeals court upholds controversial Illinois ban on semiautomatic guns

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld an Illinois law that prohibits the sale and possession of semiautomatic rifles and shotguns with certain features. One judge on the three-judge panel dissented from the decision. The law, enacted in 2023, exempts firearms owned before its effective date and allows continued possession by current owners.
