Temperatures in the UK exceeded 34 degrees Celsius on Thursday, marking the eighth day this year that the threshold was reached, according to the Met Office. The previous record for such days in a calendar year was seven, set in an earlier year. Forecasters indicated that high temperatures would persist into the following week.
