Syria Thanks Trump, Rubio as It Exits State Sponsors of Terrorism List for First Time Since 1979
Thursday, July 9, 2026
Syria was removed from the U.S. State Department's State Sponsors of Terrorism List on a date in early 2025, marking the first removal since the country's addition in 1979. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the delisting. Syrian officials expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump and Rubio for the decision. The State Department's designation list identifies countries the U.S. government determines to have repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism.
