Trump administration asks Supreme Court to hear California mail-in ballot appeal
Monday, November 2, 2026
The Trump administration's Department of Justice asked the Supreme Court to intervene in a California ballot case before the November 3 election. According to the New York Times, administration lawyers sought an emergency order to set aside 20,000 mail-in ballots. NPR reported that lower courts had rejected the administration's request to order California to set aside ballots of people it identified as "likely" noncitizens. The CNBC report noted the Supreme Court request came as the administration also appealed dismissal of a separate lawsuit over Alaska's Senate election.
