Data centers could send US climate pollution skyrocketing
Thursday, October 29, 2026
According to an analysis by the Sierra Club, US power sector carbon dioxide emissions could increase 42 percent by 2030 compared to 2025 levels due to data center electricity demand. The Sierra Club stated this increase would offset greenhouse gas reductions achieved over the previous 15 years. The analysis examined fossil fuel infrastructure expansion planned to support data center operations.
