Serious pollution by water industry remains high despite £5bn investment

England's water companies received poor environmental ratings despite spending approximately £5 billion on infrastructure improvements. Ofwat, the water regulator, assessed all but one of the companies as either "poor" or "requiring improvement" for meeting environmental targets. The assessment covered compliance with pollution controls and sewage overflow reduction standards.
