Iraqis Turn Out in Droves to Mourn Khamenei in Show of Solidarity

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis attended commemorations for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the cities of Najaf and Karbala, which contain two of Shiite Islam's holiest sites. Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, died on March 30, 2024, and was succeeded by Masoud Pezeshkian in August 2024. The commemorations took place in Iraq, where Iran has maintained significant political and military influence.
