D-Day’s Toughest Mission: Individual American Courage Can Change History

Rangers scaled the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc on June 6, 1944, to destroy German gun emplacements overlooking Omaha and Utah beaches during the D-Day invasion. The operation resulted in approximately 135 casualties among the roughly 225 Rangers who landed at the location. The guns at Pointe du Hoc were later found to have been relocated inland by German forces before the assault.
