Trump wants to remove a question about race in the census. We look back at the history

The Trump administration announced it wants to remove the race and ethnicity question from the next U.S. census. The question has appeared on the decennial census since 1790. Civil rights groups and demographers have cited the data for both historical exclusionary policies and more recent programs designed to address disparities affecting people of color.
