Switzerland rejects stricter interpretation of its neutrality

Swiss voters rejected a ballot initiative on March 16, 2026, that would have required United Nations approval before the country could impose sanctions. The measure received 56.3 percent opposition according to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. Switzerland has imposed sanctions independently of UN authorization, including measures against Russia following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The initiative's defeat allows Switzerland to continue its current practice of aligning sanctions with European Union decisions and other international partners.
