Can you eat ultra-processed foods and still be healthy? A dietitian analysed my weekly shop
Saturday, September 26, 2026
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have been associated with increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers in epidemiological studies. Researchers disagree on whether these associations result from the nutritional composition of UPFs, their additives, eating patterns related to consuming them, or other lifestyle factors. No consensus exists among nutrition scientists on whether UPFs themselves are inherently harmful or whether the health risks stem from their typical use in diets high in calories, sodium, and added sugars.
