US Sanctions Are Stifling Cuban Economic Reform Efforts, Minister Says

Cuba's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Fernández De Cossío stated that US sanctions are constraining the island's economic overhaul efforts and that Cuban citizens anticipate potential policy shifts from Washington could reduce pressure on the country. In an interview, De Cossío said, "if the US eases the amount of pressure, then those transformations in Cuba can go a long way and become truly irreversible, which is our aim and in theory is what the US wants to happen." De Cossío did not specify which economic reforms he referenced or provide details on the scope of the overhaul.
