Chinese AI models are gaining ground with U.S. companies as OpenAI, Anthropic costs surge

Recent model releases from DeepSeek and Z.ai have drawn attention from U.S. companies evaluating AI options. U.S. firms including those in technology and research sectors have tested Chinese AI models alongside offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. DeepSeek released its R1 model in December 2024, and Z.ai released its Hunyuan model in October 2024. Some U.S. companies have cited cost differences between Chinese and U.S. AI services as a factor in their evaluation process.
