Israel moves to formally recognize Armenian WWI deaths as a genocide

Monday, June 29, 2026

Israel's Cabinet approved a proposal to designate the deaths of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire during World War I as a genocide. The Armenian deaths occurred during the period of 1915-1923. Turkey has historically disputed the genocide designation, characterizing the events as deaths that resulted from deportations during wartime. Israel and Turkey have experienced recent diplomatic tensions.
