Social Security checks are projected to be cut by $540 a month in just six years
Wednesday, September 23, 2026
Social Security's trust fund is projected to be depleted in 2031, at which point benefit payments would be reduced to match incoming payroll tax revenue, according to the Social Security Administration's 2025 trustees report. If Congress does not act before that date, the program would be required by law to reduce payments across all beneficiaries. The projected reduction amounts to approximately 21 percent of scheduled benefits, which the report estimates would equal roughly $540 monthly for the average retiree based on current benefit levels.
