America gave up its rare earth edge. China took full advantage.

The United States reduced its domestic rare earth element mining and processing operations over several decades as Chinese imports became less expensive, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. China currently processes approximately 85 percent of the world's rare earth elements, which are used in defense systems, electronics, and renewable energy technology. The Department of Energy has identified this dependency as a supply chain vulnerability for critical industries.
