As Computers Take the Driver’s Seat, Experts Worry About Safety

Self-driving systems have been deployed in multiple vehicles and jurisdictions. The National Transportation Safety Board and other safety organizations have documented cases in which drivers did not intervene when autonomous systems encountered situations they were not designed to handle. Vehicle manufacturers including Tesla, Waymo, and General Motors have implemented various safeguards and warning systems in their autonomous vehicles.
