India forces caller-ID apps to feed spam reports to telcos
Saturday, September 19, 2026
India's Telecom Regulatory Authority issued an order requiring caller-identification applications to share spam report data with telecommunications operators. Truecaller, a major caller-ID app provider, stated that the one-way sharing requirement would transfer commercially valuable proprietary information to telecom operators. The regulation took effect as part of India's efforts to address unsolicited calls and messages. Telecom operators said the data would help them identify and block spam at the network level.
