Former Xbox studios Double Fine and Compulsion will keep games after going indie

Monday, July 6, 2026

Microsoft announced it is dividing four Xbox game studios—Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs—as part of a restructuring. Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games, which are becoming independent studios, will retain ownership of their existing game franchises and catalogs, according to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. The two studios becoming independent will no longer operate under Microsoft ownership following the spinoff.
