Flash floods can strike without warning — this new technology could change that

A new flood detection system uses ground-based sensors to provide earlier warnings of flash flooding in rural areas. Researchers at Indiana University developed the technology to alert residents before water reaches their homes, addressing a gap in coverage from traditional weather radar that often misses localized flooding events. The system was deployed in southern Indiana communities after heavy rainfall caused flooding in June 2025. Testing data showed the sensors could detect rising water levels up to 30 minutes before traditional warning systems.
