What Is the Treasury Bonds Basis Trade, and Is It Over?

The Treasury bonds basis trade is a financial strategy where traders simultaneously buy and sell Treasury bonds of different maturities to profit from price discrepancies between them. Treasury yields reached their highest level in nearly two decades following increases in energy prices, corporate borrowing, and government debt issuance. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced in August that the Treasury Department would increase buybacks of longer-dated bonds to lower borrowing costs.
