Researchers swap in human brain cells for a mouse's cortex

Researchers at Stanford University transplanted human brain cells into the cortex of mice, according to a study published in Nature in 2024. The human cells integrated into the mouse brain tissue and remained functional. Performance improvements in behavioral tests were modest compared to mice with the cortical region removed entirely.
