Forrest Galante says most shark bites are a case of mistaken identity as Florida attacks lead the US
Monday, July 6, 2026
Wildlife biologist Forrest Galante said most shark bites occur when sharks mistake humans for prey species. Galante attributed the seasonal spike in attacks to increased water temperatures and higher numbers of people in the ocean during summer months. He recommended swimmers avoid dawn and dusk swimming, stay in groups, and avoid areas with schools of fish. Florida has recorded the highest number of shark bites in the United States, according to the International Shark Attack File.
