Congress is under pressure to act on AI — here's what that could look like

Congress has received proposals for AI regulation from technology companies, industry groups, and civil society organizations. Senator Chuck Schumer introduced a framework called the SAFE Innovation framework in 2023 for AI oversight. Representative Jay Obernolte, who chairs the House Subcommittee on Innovation, Privacy, and Competitiveness, has held hearings on AI policy. No comprehensive federal AI legislation has been passed as of 2026.
