Mortgage demand from homebuyers drops 19% from a year ago, as interest rates surge abruptly higher

Mortgage rates reached their highest level since the beginning of 2025, according to data released this week. Mortgage demand from homebuyers declined 19 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. The increase in rates coincided with the drop in buyer activity in the mortgage market.
