EU's Ursula von der Leyen says she wants Canada to become an associate member
Wednesday, September 16, 2026
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed on Wednesday that Canada become the European Union's first associate member. The proposal followed U.S. tariffs implemented under President Donald Trump's administration. Associate membership would allow Canada a formal relationship with the EU while maintaining its independent status outside the bloc's full membership structure.
