New York Harbor whale strike sinks fire rescue boat after July 4 celebrations

A whale breaching beneath the stern of a Carteret Fire Department rescue boat caused damage that required the crew to abandon the vessel on July 5. The incident occurred in New York Harbor following July 4 celebrations. Firefighters were rescued by other vessels in the area. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and local authorities responded to document the incident. No injuries were reported.
