Village votes to leave UK over asylum housing plan in symbolic referendum

Wednesday, September 16, 2026

Residents of Piddington voted in a referendum on proposals to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers in their area. The vote was non-binding and does not automatically result in the village leaving the United Kingdom. Local authorities would retain decision-making power over any housing arrangements in the jurisdiction.
