Republican upsets party-backed rival to challenge first openly trans member of Congress

Delaware Republicans nominated John Whalen in a three-way primary to face Sarah McBride, the incumbent U.S. Representative, in the November 2026 general election. McBride, a Democrat, was elected to the House in 2024 as the first openly transgender member of Congress. The Republican primary determined which candidate would represent the party's challenge to McBride's seat.
