Inflation killed the penny. Now it’s coming for your dollar.
Tuesday, September 15, 2026
Congress has not taken legislative action to eliminate the penny as of 2026. The U.S. penny remains in circulation, though its production cost has periodically exceeded its face value. Inflation has reduced the purchasing power of the dollar; one dollar in 2000 had approximately the same purchasing power as $1.70 in 2026 according to historical inflation data.
