Good News! Turns Out the Earth Will Never Be Swallowed by the Sun
Monday, July 6, 2026
A study published in research examining the Sun's evolution found that Earth may not be consumed when the Sun expands in approximately 5 billion years. Researchers modeled the Sun's mass loss during its red giant phase and calculated orbital changes that could move Earth farther from the star. The study indicates Earth's orbit could shift outward enough to avoid being engulfed, though the planet's surface would become uninhabitable from radiation long before any such event.
