Botswana Utility to Tap Fiber, Wheeling to Almost Triple Revenue
Tuesday, September 15, 2026
Botswana's state power utility announced plans to introduce wheeling charges for independent electricity producers and lease 850 kilometers of unused fiber optic cable to increase revenue by nearly 200 percent by 2031. The utility currently operates at a loss. Under the wheeling arrangement, independent producers would pay fees to transmit electricity through the utility's grid to customers. The fiber leasing would generate additional revenue from telecommunications operators or other commercial users.
