Exclusive: Paying for frontier AI models buys 4-month head start at 5x the cost

Mozilla released a report examining the cost and timeline differences between proprietary frontier artificial intelligence models and open-source alternatives. According to the report, organizations paying for access to frontier models gained approximately four months of capability lead time compared to open-source models, at roughly five times the cost. Mozilla's analysis tracked how open-source models closed capability gaps with paid frontier offerings over time. The report was previewed by Ars Technica.
