Popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs linked to potentially deadly brain disorder
Sunday, September 13, 2026
A study identified 15 cases of Wernicke encephalopathy associated with GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs including semaglutide (Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). Wernicke encephalopathy is a neurological condition caused by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. The cases suggest a potential link between GLP-1 use and thiamine deficiency, though the study did not establish causation. GLP-1 drugs are widely used for weight loss and diabetes management.
