With a Better Understanding of Physics, We Could Predict Volcanic Eruptions
Sunday, September 13, 2026
Dr. Jem Steer, a volcanologist at the University of Leeds, stated that improved understanding of volcanic physics could eventually enable eruption forecasts comparable to weather forecasts. Steer did not specify a timeline for achieving such predictive capability. Current volcanic monitoring relies on seismic data, gas emissions, and ground deformation measurements, which provide warnings but not precise eruption predictions.
