India Wants to Buy Fewer Chinese Imports, but Keeps Needing More

Trade between India and China reached $136 billion in 2024, up from approximately $75 billion in 2019, according to Indian government data. India's trade deficit with China widened to $60 billion in 2024, driven primarily by imports of semiconductors, electronics, and industrial machinery. Indian officials have stated the country aims to reduce reliance on Chinese imports while developing domestic manufacturing capacity, particularly in electronics and renewable energy components. Despite these stated goals, India's imports from China grew 15 percent year-over-year in 2024.
