Trump Says Irish Unification Would Be ‘Fantastic,’ Breaking With Precedent
Saturday, September 12, 2026
Former President Donald Trump said Irish unification would be "fantastic" during remarks on March 17, 2025. The statement departed from the longstanding U.S. position of official neutrality on the question of Irish unification, a position maintained by successive administrations since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. The Good Friday Agreement established a framework for peace in Northern Ireland and includes provisions allowing for a future referendum on unification if a majority in Northern Ireland supports it.
